How To Get A Warehouse Job

Working in a warehouse is an excellent way to learn in-demand skills, gain relevant experience, and earn a good wage. From an initial warehousing position, you can easily grow into higher-paying roles such as material handler or logistics coordinator.

Use these tips, and you’re well on your way to landing a great warehouse job!

Demonstrate Basic Warehouse Job Skills

If you’ve previously worked in a warehouse, you may have learned warehouse-specific skills like packing or road transportation. However, there’s no need to despair if you’re coming in with no experience. You can probably demonstrate at least a few transferable skills from previous jobs or school. Adaptability, attention to detail, organization, and the ability to follow procedures are highly valuable skills that warehousing employers seek out.

To get an entry level warehouse job, the most important skills to have are punctuality, the ability to work on a team, and a positive attitude. New employees simply need to show up on time and ready to work. Most warehousing employers also require candidates to be able to lift up to 50 pounds consistently.

Do Your Research About Warehouse Jobs

It’s always wise to research the company before a job interview, regardless of which industry you are in. Your interviewer may ask you a few questions to determine how interested you are in the job, and you will want to be prepared with some basic information.

Here are a few points you should try to learn about before an interview:

  • How does this company make its products? Or, where do the products come from?
  • How does your desired role fit in with the rest of the company?
  • What are some recent industry developments the company has implemented?
  • Who are the key personnel?
  • What are the opportunities for growth?

Keep in mind that researching the company is more important if you are applying for a competitive job or well in advance of your start date. Employers who are looking to hire immediately may not expect you to do this level of research, although it never hurts.

Provide Background Information

Many warehouse employers or agencies hiring for warehouse jobs ask for verification of your high school education, a standard seven-year background check, and a drug screening. If you are concerned about how your background will appear, keep in mind that not all employers require this information, although most do.

One of the great things about warehousing jobs is that you can enter the workforce from nearly any background, especially if you are willing to start with seasonal or temp work. Whether you are a stay-at-home parent re-entering the workforce, a recent graduate, or an established sheet metal worker looking for a temp job, you are a welcome addition to the warehouse team.

Sign Up With A Warehouse Staffing Agency

Working with a warehouse staffing agency can help you get a job faster. In many cases, employers use this method of finding workers because they need help immediately. Some staffing agencies regularly place candidates within a few days of signing up, although this is not always the case.

LG Resources matches candidates with jobs in warehousing, manufacturing, transportation, and more. We partner with a wide variety of employers in Utah and Kansas City. Sign up today to get started on finding your next warehouse job!
