Why Skilled Trades Like Welding and HVAC Are Booming in Utah

Utah has long been a great place for skilled tradespeople. Our state’s nickname, “the Beehive State,” comes from our industrious culture. It’s no surprise that there is a strong demand for skilled trades throughout the state.

In recent decades, fewer high school graduates have pursued vocational training. There’s now a growing gap between the number of job openings and skilled tradespeople with the right qualifications for the work. If you’re a welder, HVAC technician, or student planning to pursue a skilled trade, you’ve come to the market at the right time.

Utah’s Job Market in 2026

Skilled Trades 2

Utah currently has one of the highest concentrations of advanced materials and manufacturing companies in the United States. What’s more, manufacturing jobs are growing faster here than in any other state. Based on data from the state Department of Workforce Services, Utahns are likely to see 23.1% growth in manufacturing employment over the next decade.

Meanwhile, employers are competing for skilled tradespeople to help with construction projects as our state’s cities continue to build up. Over the past five years, Utah’s construction industry employment has grown an average of 7% per year, all while wages have increased an average of 4% per year.

The Utah Department of Workforce Services lists welder as the #2 hottest job in advanced manufacturing and HVAC technician as the #4 hottest job in construction. This is a great time to be in either of these fields.

Welding Opportunities in Utah

Welders make an average of $22.98 per hour in Utah, according to Indeed data, but wages can go up to $31.74 or higher depending on the job and location. A welding supervisor makes an average of $64,181 per year.

As with other jobs, your pay will depend on your experience level, location, and job conditions, among other factors. If you are just starting your career, your wages in the industry will likely be lower, although you can make more than you would in an entry-level unskilled occupation.

HVAC Opportunities in Utah

Based on statewide data from Indeed, the average hourly wage for an HVAC technician in Utah is $28.98 per hour, but some roles pay as much as $48.73 per hour. If you become an HVAC supervisor in this state, you can expect to make a cool $84,967 per year.

Like with welding, your pay will depend on your experience level, exact location, and the job conditions. Based on ongoing trends, hourly pay for HVAC professionals in construction roles will likely continue to rise faster than inflation.
